Sydney Dance Company Behind the Scenes for Free

The trip from the North Shore to the Sydney Opera House promises a treat for lovers of dance and photography.

Free to view on the Opera House’s Western Broadwalk is Pushing for Perfection, a behind-the-scenes “photographic revelation” of the Sydney Dance Company.

The images, taken by acclaimed photographer Jez Smith, document the company’s development and rehearsals of artistic director Rafael Bonachela’s The Land of Yes and The Land of No, which will premiere in Australia at the 2011 Brisbane Festival, followed by a limited season in October at Sydney Theatre.

Photographer Jez Smith was involved in Australia’s Next Top Model, but quickly decided his comfort zone did not include “reality TV”.

After spending time with members of the Sydney Dance Company, Jez began photographing the unseen rituals and extraordinary efforts of the dancers on their quest for performance perfection.

Rafael Bonachela says the photographic exhibition is the first time the doors to Sydney Dance Company’s rehearsal studio have been open for public viewing – “With each of his masterpieces Jez has captured a very true moment in our dancers’ lives. Pushing for Perfection is raw and it’s real.”

Pushing for Perfection is on display until Thursday 29 September 2011 at the Sydney Opera House Western Broadwalk.
